AC compressor repair that finds the real reason it will not run

Start components, overloads, windings and refrigerant conditions tested before anyone mentions a new compressor.

A compressor that hums, clicks or trips a breaker is not always a failed compressor. Many of these calls end with a capacitor, contactor or airflow fix. When the compressor itself has failed, you get the facts to decide what comes next.

  • Electrical tests first
  • Warranty coverage checked
  • Repair and replace compared

The compressor's job and why it gets blamed

The compressor is the pump of an air conditioning or heat pump system. It raises the pressure and temperature of refrigerant vapor so the outdoor coil can release heat. It is also the most expensive component in the outdoor unit, which is why a compressor diagnosis carries so much weight.

Because so many problems stop the compressor from running, it is easy to blame the compressor itself. A careful technician treats the compressor as a suspect, not a conclusion, and works through the parts and conditions that control it before deciding it has failed.

We also ask how the problem developed. A compressor that struggled for weeks before stopping points in a different direction than one that quit suddenly after a storm or power interruption, and that history helps focus the testing.

Start capacitors and run capacitors

Most residential compressors rely on a run capacitor, and some also use a start capacitor or hard start kit, to get moving and stay running efficiently. Capacitors weaken with heat and age. When one drifts below its rated value, the compressor may struggle to start, hum loudly and then shut off on its internal protection.

Testing a capacitor with a meter under proper safety precautions shows its actual value compared with its rating. A bulging top or leaking oil is a visual clue, but many failing capacitors look normal. Replacing a weak capacitor is one of the most common repairs we perform on compressor complaints.

In some cases, a hard start kit helps an older compressor that is otherwise healthy start more easily. We recommend one only when readings suggest it will help, and we explain that it assists starting rather than reversing internal wear.

Contactors, wiring and thermal overloads

The contactor is a switch that sends power to the compressor and outdoor fan when the thermostat calls for cooling. Pitted or welded contacts can keep power from reaching the compressor or leave it running when it should stop. Burned wiring and loose terminals at the contactor or compressor are also common findings.

Many compressors have an internal thermal overload that opens when the compressor overheats. The unit may run briefly, stop, and refuse to restart until it cools, which can take a long time. Overheating itself has causes, such as a dirty outdoor coil, a failed condenser fan, low refrigerant charge or incorrect voltage.

Finding and fixing the cause of overheating matters as much as getting the compressor running. Otherwise it will trip again, and repeated overheating shortens its life.

Testing the compressor itself

With power safely disconnected, the technician measures resistance across the compressor's windings and checks for a short to ground. These readings help reveal whether the motor is electrically sound, open, shorted or grounded.

A compressor with sound windings can still be mechanically locked. Measuring current during a start attempt helps identify that condition. Sometimes a stuck compressor can be coaxed into running with a hard start device, but a mechanically seized compressor usually needs replacement.

Refrigerant readings complete the picture. A compressor that runs but produces little pressure difference may have worn internal valves, while abnormal readings can also point to problems elsewhere in the circuit.

When the compressor has failed

If testing confirms compressor failure, you face a real decision. Replacing a compressor involves recovering refrigerant, removing and brazing in the new compressor, replacing the filter drier, evacuating the system and recharging it. It is significant labor, and refrigerant costs can add to the total.

Compressor parts are often covered by a longer manufacturer warranty than other components, frequently depending on timely registration. We check the unit's warranty status when possible. Even when the part is covered, labor and refrigerant usually are not, so the repair still has a cost.

The age of the system, its refrigerant type, the condition of the coils and the likelihood of other failures all factor in. We provide the repair price next to the information needed to compare replacement, and when replacement makes sense our Ac Installation process takes over.

Burnouts and system cleanup

A compressor motor that burns out can contaminate the refrigerant and oil with acids and debris. If a new compressor is installed without addressing that contamination, it may fail again quickly.

After a burnout, technicians may test the oil for acid, install suction line and liquid line filter driers designed for cleanup, and change them after a period of operation. The goal is to protect the new compressor from the damage left behind by the old one.

These steps are explained and priced up front so there are no surprises. Skipping them to save money in the short term often costs more in the long run.

Preventing future compressor problems

Compressors last longest when they run at the right charge, with clean coils, good airflow and stable voltage. Annual maintenance that checks capacitors, cleans the outdoor coil and verifies refrigerant readings addresses the most common causes of compressor stress.

Homeowners can help by keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris and vegetation, changing filters on schedule and avoiding rapid on and off cycling from thermostat adjustments. Short cycling is especially hard on compressors.

If a compressor has been struggling to start for a while, schedule service before it fails completely. A capacitor replaced early costs far less than a compressor replaced late.

Heat pumps and year-round wear

Heat pump compressors work in both heating and cooling seasons, so they accumulate more running hours than air conditioner compressors. Cold weather adds stress, especially if refrigerant migrates into the compressor while it is off.

Crankcase heaters help prevent that migration. A failed crankcase heater can lead to hard starts and liquid refrigerant entering the compressor, which damages it. Checking this component is part of our heat pump compressor diagnosis.

The same careful testing applies whether the compressor sits in an air conditioner or a heat pump, and the same written price comes before any repair.

Symptoms that point to compressor trouble

These signs call for a technician rather than repeated resets.

Humming without starting

A loud hum followed by silence often means a weak capacitor or a locked compressor.

Breaker trips at startup

High starting current can trip the circuit and needs electrical testing.

Unit runs, air stays warm

The fan may run while the compressor sits idle on its thermal overload.

Clicking on and off

Rapid cycling can come from contactors, overloads or control problems.

Loud rattling or grinding

Mechanical noise from the compressor area deserves prompt attention.

Hot outdoor unit cabinet

Excess heat can signal overheating from airflow or charge problems.

Outdoor unit humming but not cooling? Turn it off and call, so a weak part does not become a failed compressor.

How we diagnose a compressor problem

The process moves from the simplest causes to the most serious.

  1. Visual and airflow check

The outdoor coil, fan and wiring are inspected for obvious problems.

  2. Electrical tests

Capacitors, contactor, voltage and starting current are measured.

  3. Compressor tests

Winding resistance and ground checks show whether the motor is sound.

  4. Refrigerant readings

Pressures and temperatures confirm how the system performs while running.

  5. Options and repair

You receive a written price for the repair, and replacement information when it is relevant.

Customers on their compressor repairs

I was sure the compressor was dead. It turned out to be a failed capacitor, and the unit was running again the same afternoon.

Derek M.Humming outdoor unit

They checked our warranty, explained what was and was not covered and installed cleanup driers so the new compressor would last.

Alicia F.Compressor replacement under warranty

The contactor had burned terminals. After the repair, the breaker has not tripped once.

Nathan K.Repeated breaker trips

AC compressor repair questions

Can a compressor be repaired, or only replaced?

Many problems around the compressor are repairable, such as capacitors, contactors, wiring and overheating causes. Internal compressor failures generally require replacing the compressor.

Is it worth replacing a compressor on an older system?

It depends on the system's age, refrigerant type and overall condition. We compare the repair price with replacement so you can decide.

Does the manufacturer warranty cover labor?

Manufacturer warranties typically cover the part. Labor and refrigerant are usually not included unless a separate labor warranty applies.

Why does my compressor shut off after a few minutes?

Common causes include overheating from a dirty coil or failed fan, low refrigerant, or a weak capacitor. Testing identifies which one applies.

Should I keep resetting the breaker?

No. Repeated tripping indicates an electrical problem that should be diagnosed before the unit runs again.

How long does a compressor replacement take?

It often takes most of a day once the part is available, including recovery, brazing, evacuation and recharging.

Can a hard start kit fix my compressor?

It can help an otherwise healthy compressor start more easily. It does not repair internal damage.

Can a power surge damage a compressor?

Electrical disturbances can damage capacitors, contactors, control boards and sometimes the compressor itself. If the unit stopped after a storm or outage, mention that when you call so the technician checks those components carefully.

What does a compressor diagnosis cost?

The diagnostic visit has a service fee that the dispatcher confirms when you book. Any repair is then priced separately in writing before work starts.

Ac Tune Up

Annual inspections catch weak capacitors and dirty coils before they stress the compressor.

Heat Pump Repair

Heat pump compressors face year-round wear and need the same careful testing.

Find out whether your compressor really failed

Call for a compressor diagnosis that tests the start components, wiring and motor before any replacement is suggested. You will receive a written price and clear options before work begins.

If the unit is still trying to start, switch it off at the thermostat while you wait. Repeated failed starts put extra heat and strain on the compressor windings.
